Introduction to Beautiful Nusa Penida

If you're holidaying in Bali, it is definitely worth taking a 35-minute fast boat trip to Nusa Penida, a stunning island located southeast of Bali.  Covering an area of approximately 202 square kilometres, the island is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, which include dramatic cliffs with unique rock formations, beautiful beaches, and lush tropical vegetation.  I visited in May, volunteering for 2 weeks at the Sea Turtle Sanctuary, so was able to take in some beautiful sites in my free time.  The weather was dry and sunny but not humid.  

1. Tembeling Beach and Forest

By far my favourite spot on Nusa Penida is a hidden gem known as Tembeling Beach and natural pool.  It is about a 35-minute drive from Nusa Penida harbour on the Southwest side of the island, and while you can hire a scooter, we hired a driver as the roads are quite tricky and very narrow in parts.  It is quite the hike into the forest to get there from the car park, but worth the walk.  Entry fee is 10,000IDR.  You can also pay for a scooter ride in and back (75,000IDR approx) if you are not up to the sometimes quite steep walk, but the views are magnificent along the way, and absolutely breathtaking once you get there.  You will also see resident monkeys when you get there.  The sea view is breathtaking, and the beach is perfect for relaxing, but unfortunately it is not a beach to swim at as is known for riptides.  Luckily there are two natural swimming pools, one small for soaking and the other large pool you can swim in.  There is also a mystical Cairn Cave, another example of amazing nature.  Tembeling Beach is a tranquil paradise in my view.

Our driver lived not far from Tembeling Beach, so after our visit we were treated to a visit to his family land where he climbed high and cut down some fresh coconuts and gave us a demonstration on how to open the coconuts for a fresh drink of coconut juice.  A perfect example of the wonderful hospitality of the locals.  Thank you, Gary!!

2. Kelingking Beach

One of the island's most iconic destinations is Kelingking Beach, often referred to as 'T-Rex Bay' due to the rock formation resembling a dinosaur head.  This scenic spot features dramatic cliffs that plunge to the sea.  You can hike down to the beach, although it requires a moderate level of fitness and caution.  It is not a swimming beach due to the strong ocean currents.  The views are breathtaking from the top, making it a prime Instagram photo opportunity.  If you do go down to the beach, get back up to the clifftop in time for the beautiful sunset view.  Kelingking Beach is on the West Side of Nusa Penida and approximately 45 minutes by car or scooter from Nusa Penida harbour.

3. Broken Beach

Another spectacular site is Broken Beach, known for its picturesque natural arch that connects the sea to a stunning cove - this arch was formed due to natural sea erosion collapsing part of the shore creating a natural arch, which the sea washes into the natural cove/lagoon.  While you cannot swim at Broken Beach cove due to access, take a walk around the lagoon to take in the magnificent views, and you can also spot manta rays swimming beneath the surface.

4. Angel's Billabong

If you do wish to have a swim, Angel's Billabong, just a few minutes away from Broken Beach, has a natural infinity pool where you can swim during low tide.  It is also surrounded by striking cliffs and is a picture-perfect example of nature.  Please be certain to check the tide schedules before swimming to ensure your safety.

5. Snorkelling

Snorkelling for the first time was definitely a highlight of our trip, literally swimming up close and amongst beautifully coloured tropical fish, sea turtles and coral.  Our tour went to three beautiful scenic points, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, and Manta Bay, Nusa Penida.  Unfortunately, on the day the water was a bit rough and so we did not see any Manta Rays but something to look forward to next time.  There are many snorkelling tours available on Nusa Penida to choose from, either booking ahead or in town on the day.  Some also offer a scooter pickup service from your accommodation, which is great!

Helpful Travel Tips for Visiting Nusa Penida:

Upon arrival at Nusa Penida, your first consideration should be transportation.  The island does not have a well-developed public transport system, so the most convenient options include renting a scooter or a car with a driver.  For those unfamiliar with riding scooters, hiring a car with a driver is recommended, as local roads can be challenging due to their uneven terrain, and being steep and narrow in parts and a lot of traffic.  Scooter rental services can be found near the harbour, offering competitive rates.

When it comes to local customs and etiquette, it is crucial to respect the island's cultural and natural sites.  Dress modestly when visiting temples or sacred areas, and refrain from littering to preserve the beautiful landscapes. Swimwear is considered to be for the beach or pool, please cover up when walking up the street.  Engaging with local communities in a respectful manner will enrich your experience.

Safety is another paramount concern while traveling in Nusa Penida. It is advisable to always wear a helmet while riding a scooter and adhere to local traffic laws.  Additionally, be extra cautious near cliff edges and during ocean activities.
